Now that I'm actually living here, the general American ignorance of even other English-speaking countries is wild. Last week, I met a random couple at a hockey game. The dude mixed up Australia and England and blinked when corrected, and neither knew 'Stepan' was a real name.

It's a form of ignorance almost unique to the USA. Somehow people from other countries are more aware that theirs is not the only way of life.

There are SO MANY USAians who have never left the US and they are so parochial and they don't know it. Living outside the US for 6 months should be compulsory. BTW where are you living?

Slightly in her defense, as a kid, there's a lot of that sort of indoctrination that happens due to how they teach things in school. At least there was for me. Granted, one should seek out knowledge, but I get how it happens. It's very systemic and starts very young.
