Now that I'm actually living here, the general American ignorance of even other English-speaking countries is wild. Last week, I met a random couple at a hockey game. The dude mixed up Australia and England and blinked when corrected, and neither knew 'Stepan' was a real name.

When I said that I liked different things about the US and about Australia, she was genuinely startled, like it hadn't for one second occurred to her that someone might not prefer the USA. Nothing malicious about it, she just... seemed not to have considered it.

Slightly different take, I am from the US, I have relatives that live in Mexico and I visit frequently. My friends here think that it is strange that my relatives are happier living there than in the US and that I am considering moving there as well.
