Now that I'm actually living here, the general American ignorance of even other English-speaking countries is wild. Last week, I met a random couple at a hockey game. The dude mixed up Australia and England and blinked when corrected, and neither knew 'Stepan' was a real name.

The week before that, I got a Lyft with a girl who was stunned to learn that people in other countries drove on the left-hand side of the road. When I confirmed that yes, I was from another country, she replied, "Oh, so you prefer it here, then," - a statement, not a question.

When I said that I liked different things about the US and about Australia, she was genuinely startled, like it hadn't for one second occurred to her that someone might not prefer the USA. Nothing malicious about it, she just... seemed not to have considered it.
