This latter is relevant because one of the players, who they were heckling, was called Stepan, and they just could not fathom his name. I suggested he might be from Germany (I looked it up later; he's Belarusian) because Stepan is a variant of Stephen, and they Did Not Compute.

The week before that, I got a Lyft with a girl who was stunned to learn that people in other countries drove on the left-hand side of the road. When I confirmed that yes, I was from another country, she replied, "Oh, so you prefer it here, then," - a statement, not a question.

When I said that I liked different things about the US and about Australia, she was genuinely startled, like it hadn't for one second occurred to her that someone might not prefer the USA. Nothing malicious about it, she just... seemed not to have considered it.
