so, book twitter. an aspiring writer friend was today offered a contract by a "hybrid" publisher asking for $2500 up front for publishing costs and specifying this amount had to be made by Venmo "for security and record-keeping's sake". on a scale of bad to BAD, how bad is this?
It would depend on the length of the work and the type of editorial service, but my gut says no. @victoriastrauss ?

Is the $2,500 for editing, or is that the total cost of the publishing package? Without knowing which company this is, it's hard to weigh in, other than to say that the term "hybrid" _always_ makes me suspicious. Most so-called hybrid publishers are just vanity pubs.

Just edits. All edits. And from freelance editors. Not a hybrid company. I don't have an issue with hybrid companies. But you need to know what to look for.

For a _qualified_ editor, $2,500 might actually be low, depending on the work and the kind of editing. There are decent editors out there doing work for hundreds rather than thousands, but for an elite editor, writers can easily pay 5 figures.

I've never seen a freelance editor with actual schooling in it. No credentials beyond a portfolio
