so, book twitter. an aspiring writer friend was today offered a contract by a "hybrid" publisher asking for $2500 up front for publishing costs and specifying this amount had to be made by Venmo "for security and record-keeping's sake". on a scale of bad to BAD, how bad is this?

It's also hijacking the term hybrid as it's been used in the trade for a decade now, to mean an author self/indie publishing projects alongside trad contracts. Newbies will be confused, to the scammers' benefit.
