You ever just walk through a shopping centre and let the full bizarre incongruity of capitalism wash over you? Every shop you pass is full of products that will never be bought - that were always destined to be thrown out rather than used - because that's how it works.

You know? The sheer SCALE of it. The absolute, visceral unsustainability of every single subservient industry that underpins modern capitalism. It's so bizarre in so many ways, I can't believe how normalised it is; and yet I still unsee it a lot of the time for the same reason.

Something that was really brought home to me the first Christmas we had a toddler. She got given so much meaningless rubbish that she'll use maybe once or twice.

I’ve become more aware of it since becoming a parent. The sheer amount of bright, useless kid junk is boggling, and now I reevaluate adult versions: kitchen gadgets, craft store pablum.

This gets me CONSTANTLY at birthday/holidays. Especially because he doesn't understand the point of presents. We have a stack from last Christmas from well-meaning relatives still new in boxes and ready to donate *this* Christmas.
