So, Twitter. In light of the ongoing clusterfuck that is #brexit, let me tell you a little about my white, Australian experience of dealing with the UK visa authority, a complete shitshow of a bureaucracy that is in no way prepared to handle what's coming.

Exactly this. It’s life-alteringly shambolic and bureaucratic to the Nth. I’ve *only* just received

I am from Texas and was in UK in a unmarried partners visa with my ex bf. So it’s not lost on me that I am only here bc the UK was leagues ahead progressively at the time (this is 2004). So that relationship breaks down quite soon after I arrive. It did t survive the move well

But I meet my now Civil Partner. After 1.5 yrs we have the ceremony. We have the ceremony. Happy days. Now my visa from my old relationship is up. You have a strict window within which to apply. Like, 30 days from expiry. I seek to have another 2-yr limited leave to remain

...this time attached to my UK citizen civil partner. I’ve lived in london for 4 years now. Therefore broke. I’m 26. I’m trying to scrape a living. Anyway, they insist I go back to the states to apply for a visa they say I am entitled to. Which means flying all the way to LA

.. but bc it was a CP they weren’t keen to set a precedent. So I called foul and fought it. I spent a year writing letters, calling the Home Office, etc and it just took forever. Then I get a letter which said basically they’d had enough. My passport was at Heathrow ...

I was escorted thru security while my partner watched me leave wondering if I’d ever come back. I had this nasty stamp in my passport which haunted me for ten years. Every time I came thru the border - it also got my first citizen app rejected...
