Which means we've got this fascinating dichotomy between stories where the defining quality of humanity is our intelligence, with uniformity seen as an evolved state, versus stories where stories were we're defined by our cultures, with diversity essential to evolution.

Great thread. I'm curious what you thought about Blade Runner 2049 with all this in mind.

YESSSS MURDERBOT

Like, I cannot tell you how much I identify with a robot that really wants to consume media all day and be left alone but is bothered by irritating urges to make a difference and help people.

Murderbot is amazing, and I have never identified with an AI so much in my life. Have you read The Secret Life of Bots by
@zanzjan or the Machineries of Empire series by @motomaratai? Both have interesting AI culturesThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Check out Autonomous by
@Annaleen as well for bots that have their own subculture. It also challenges this concept that bots have to be cisgendered, and plays with sexuality vs function in a really interesting way.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

/adds book to my rec list I really like this take - it fits so well, from Asimov to today! and now I have words to describe why I dug "Ex Machina" so much ...I keeps trying to fit "Chappie" in this framework too, but I don't quite have the brain to do it rn

Great thread. Honest question, Where/how does a movie AI like Chappie fit in? Still has the set-apart singular oppressed status, but has a kind of emotion and the culture isn’t the standard western elite.
-
I’ve not seen Chappie, so I can’t comment - however, I’m not saying this is a universal expression of robot stories; just a weirdly common one
