Question for the disabled community: for those who are amputees, is there a preferred term for the area that's missing a limb besides 'stump'?

I have to say that my husband Erin, who is an amputee, thinks "residual limb" (which, yes, is the medical term, we heard it too) is mealy-mouthed. He calls it a stump emphatically. Or "the short leg" (usually accompanied by a wry grin.) Or "the leg with no foot."

I think "limb" is a good choice though. I have two amputee characters in the space opera I'm writing and I've used that. Also just "arm" or "leg" depending on circumstance.

Ah, yeah that wouldn’t be the right term for the setting. Good luck, I hope you figure something out!
