My five year old, who knows nothing of politics, asked me while walking home today, "Can people walk from one country to another?" I was briefly robbed of speech. "Mummy? Did you hear me?" Yes, sweetheart. I heard you. I just had to choose which truth to tell you.

Instead, I told him that yes, people can walk between countries, but not in Australia, because the whole country is an island. He promptly set about deciding how people could come and go in boats - and then became very concerned about poisonous sea-creatures posing a danger.

So we talked about what types of creatures live in the sea, and he came away thinking that the biggest danger in travelling from Australia to another country was sharks. Forgive me, world. I didn't have the heart to correct him.
