🎙 on the gap between what an experiment did and the verbal explanation given for it. This is a pervasive problem in most sciences, and more serious than the replication crisis. Even if your facts are right, what do they actually imply?

One of their best episodes. Both discussions of cancel culture and generalizability were very insightful. I agree with most things that were said, but I do want to push back a little on one point. In some cases, a significant ">0" difference IS very meaningful. 1/n

Love this observation by : The fact that fake data in psych often have absurdly large effect sizes shows how immature our theories are. Neither fraudster nor reviewers knew what to expect — and worse, nobody even seemed to *care*! Clip:

  10. In our discussion, we wonder if Tal is somewhat guilty of the same sin he accuses the field of: Using a quantitative argument to support verbal claims that could have been made on logical grounds alone, in this case about the centuries old problem of induction.

  11. Is There a Generalizability Crisis? We discuss a new preprint by suggesting that quantitative research in psychology is suffering from a generalizability crisis. Before that, we briefly discuss 's new video on cancel-culture.

Epic takedown of aspirational "easy to fix" research: "Major problems like poverty can’t be overcome with a couple of workshops in a school or a doctor’s visit....We can’t allow our desire to make things better lead us to accept lower-quality research..."

Really enjoyed the latest episode, even as a non-US, non-Canadian resident. It was pretty cool to hear some of my notions about Canada and Canadians being reaffirmed or disproved. All in all, still sounds like a dream land. Go Canada!

LISTEN: Should we be relying on willpower to accomplish our goals? That’s up for debate, as more and more psychologists are starting to shy away from the idea. of weighs in:

On my recent drive back into State College from Toronto yesterday, I got the chance to listen to with guest (Ep. #36) and wanted to say a few things having worked with Nick as ’s lab manager for a couple of years while Nick was around. 1/
