A troubling piece of luddite reasoning from WIRED. Reducing the goal of Mars colonization to a billionaire's toy at odds with human welfare on Earth is a dangerous distortion of reality. As @WIRED is unwilling or unable to do the abstract thinking here, a few thoughts. THREAD.pic.twitter.com/WQ1xMGzADd

1/ We aren’t building “impossible castles in the sky.” A small army of experts have addressed almost every criticism from WIRED, and answered many more serious questions, in Anatomy of Next. The science isn’t new.https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/new-world-1-new-world/id1123461944?i=1000411567197&mt=2 …

2/ NASA accounts for roughly one half percent of the US budget. The global space industry accounts for less than half a percent of global GDP. If looking to redirect some tremendous resource, you've taken a wrong turn at Mars. But Mars *is* important.

3/ Each technological advance required of the Martian frontier will significantly improve human life on Earth. This has been the case of every frontier in human history, from the American New World to research on the abstract mathematical frontier that led to nuclear power.

4/ Speaking of power: As we develop new models for thrust in nuclear, ion, and antimatter, energy efficiency and production on Earth will naturally benefit. Energy costs will decrease, global prosperity will increase.

5/ Biology. Let’s start modestly: developing crops that can feed Martians with far less nitrogen will also reduce Earth reliance on environmentally-destructive fertilizer, increase yields at home, and eradicate hunger.

6/ Geoengineering. In terraforming Mars, we will take a historical leap in understanding climate. Consider Mars an essential testing ground. Next step: terraforming Earth, and conquering global warming with technology.

7/ The benefits of colonizing Mars are not only numerous, but obvious. So is the real motivation behind an indictment of such ambition rather an indictment of humanity? The question doesn’t seem to be about Mars, but people. Why are HUMANS important?

8/ Humans are important because life is important, and to the best of our knowledge we are the only beings capable of preserving, defending, and carrying life through the universe. That is our potential, and that is our destiny. Mars is the way.

Up to this last point the thread was great. Our potential and destiny is to "carry life"? Why? That's a simple view of humanity. And no one in their right mind can honestly think we are the only beings in the Universe capable of doing this, even if there is no "proof" otherwise.

Space travel will not happen until we get serious about applying AI Automation to software development. Defense and aerospace budget overruns are case in point
