Faculty friends, we are 12 months into a pandemic. Your students are not trying to trick you, they are in distress. They need your kindness and empathy more than they need training for some hypothetical “real world” where deadlines are immutable and trauma is not acknowledged.

Amen. Let's just be human at this point. Really, even if they were trying to trick us. So, what? I acknowledge that exceptions exist to this in fields where lives are on the line.

I don’t understand the obsession with arbitrary deadlines. The proverbial real world seems way more flexible about deadlines than universities would have students think.

All of my assignments have a due date with a no excuse needed 48h or 72h grace period. And longer if needed. It has helped keep us on track and sane.

As a non-traditional student with a full-time job and a kid: thank you. I've asked for a 1 day extension and it wasn't given "because it wouldn't be fair to students who turn their work in on time." It was so, so defeating. I ended up dropping the class.

I live in the "real world" and I get deadline extensions all the time.

Absolutely agree. Also think administrators need to hear this b/c there’s a lot of sympathy for students but it’s lacking for faculty who’re in just as much of a crunch. We’re being squeezed & held to deadlines & standards that should be changing too. We need empathy all around.

Yes! I have a student with chronic illnesses and another prof literally said he thought they 'pulled one over ' on him for getting a C in his class still while IN AND OUT OF THE HOSPITAL FOR THEIR MEDICAL NEEDS.

Also-in the real world extensions are requested *routinely* to accommodate real world occurrences both personal and professional all the time. Why do we create fake urgency to torment?

Pandemic world is just an extreme version of real life. Students should ALWAYS be treated with compassion, generosity, grace. Let's teach them to live in the world as it ought to be, not some uber-capitalist rat race. They are the world to come.

And the world can and will be changed by people who realize it is far from perfect as it is.
