  2. And when those teams are military teams they are making life and death decisions under very stressful circumstances. We want military teams to do their jobs well, and we want to know if they can’t. 5/

  3. And we’re doing it because bias is real and it hurts people and teams. It’s not (only) about justice, it’s about increasing productivity and improving decision making. Bias makes teams make bad decisions and slows them down. 4/

  4. We are *very aware* of the risks surveillance tech introduces, esp for minorities, LGBTQ folx, etc. Part of the project is developing hardware and software that draws meaningful conclusions from privacy-preserving data 3/

  5. There are ways to design recording tech that preserve privacy. Digitally obscuring faces, recording heat signatures instead of video, jumbling transcripts before writing to memory, etc. etc. 2/

  6. Some thoughts, on the off chance anyone is authentically curious: It’s good to be suspicious of surveillance tech. At the same time, computers are good at some things people are bad at. Recognizing our own biases in group interactions is one of those things. 1/

  7. Ooh fun, the troll army has found our research. Too much surveillance. Not enough surveillance! Bias is not real! What about bias against white men! I’m having trouble keeping up...

The most beautiful thing about embracing restorative justice is that it allows compassion for parties you’ve been told you have to choose between, it allows the complexity of all people, it allows accountability to be understood as love. It allows grief and truth to be comrades.

  12. Counterpoint - why even have letters if they’re universally positive? It’s a ton of work to write and read them. Vague flattering letters are not very helpful. Don’t be cruel, but I always appreciate when letter writers include strengths and opportunities for growth.

Another meta-analysis showing that social media is unlikely the cause of declines in teen well-being. Glad to see more large-scale analyses in this space, especially longitudinal and preregistered ones.
