Increasingly I find the single most important criteria when deciding which piece of media to consume is length. I want the article, podcast episode, video, etc. to begin and end within time I have, so I get satisfaction of completion and don’t have to remember to finish it later
I predict content creators & media platforms will begin to prioritize this: -sorting items by duration -recommendations based on time slots in your calendar -sliders allowing you to scale media up or down using algorithms -more serialization so bigger pieces fit in small chunks
Yeah, I agree. Also maybe some standard of focus/cognitive resources available? Like there’s stuff you watch in an ambient-multi-tasking way, and stuff you consume in granular detail via primary focus
Yes, I’d call it quality of attention. But most ppl aren’t self aware enough to use that. Time available is the closest proxy
What’s this about?
Length is a function of amplitude and depth of knowledge. Logically, the longest a given piece of content is, deeper and/or broader it is. We need better ways to figure out what we’re looking for so we don’t under/over-consume content; and also giving way to serendipity.
