Why can't they be? Just because they historically haven't been doesn't mean we can't give them depth and complexity going forward.

This. And that I don't think it's really a problem of existing character having the potential of becoming queer, it's the problem that they're all heterosexual. The fact we don't point to that more, the fact that none of them are queer should be the bigger discussion.

only presented in heterosexual relationships almost exclusively.* is what I should've said.

Loving this whole conversations, misunderstandings included.
I get the whole... "this feels wrong" thing, too. It's extremely difficult to explain - so much is contextual and heavily dependent upon personal experiences. (1/2)1 vastaus 0 uudelleentwiittausta 2 tykkäystä -

A sort of converse issue I've had for *years* as a member of RP communities is there are times you can tell when a cishet girl writes/draws gay relationships as a personal fetish. It's extremely hard to explain how you know, but when you spot it it's...unpleasant. (2/?)

(oops guess I had more to say) It's a form of objectification and dehumanization that I think most of us are just barely starting to talk about, let alone fully grasp. On the one hand, I love when people stretch outside of who they are and make an effort to represent others (3)

I went to a SDCC panel that revealed one of the major characters of Voltron was gay. And the way all the LADIES in the crowd thirsty-screamed was INTENSELY offputting. Yikes.

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaahhh… I've been having a *REALL* hard time getting back to finishing the new Voltron ever since I encountered the hard core fetishization in fan art. It's cool that they canonized a gay character, but...it's hard for me to get that feeling out of my gut.

I had to disconnect myself from the Voltron fandom after s6. Still enjoyed the last two seasons. But the fandom was kind of insufferable, sometimes. Shiro's great and I wish they could've done more with him on the LGBT front, but showrunners don't always get what they want :(

Tämä twiitti ei ole saatavilla.
IIRC Rebecca Sugar was in a better position with better leverage, she could pack up her show and go if they didn't let her do the wedding. Wasn't the case with Voltron, since they were answering to many different stakeholders? Could be wrong!
