Here's the main panel after some cleaning. There's still a mess in the top left, bottom left, and bottom right corners, but it turns out this is places where the paint chipped off, so I can't really fix those with cleaning.pic.twitter.com/6RXOQi3sfP

all the buttons and switches and screws such are currently soaking in some soapy water, then I'll probably hit them with some wd40 to get off any remaining residue, then start putting it back together.

it turns out the switches are magnetic reed switches! The plunger has a magnet on it, which makes or breaks a connection inside the reed switch.pic.twitter.com/LnITc23nsI

also I doublechecked the keyswitches, they say "SMK" on them. That's Showa Musen Kogyo Kabushiki Gaisha, a japanese electronics company that's been around since the 20s. https://deskthority.net/wiki/SMK

It's not an exact match, but I found the manual for a similar control panel, so I can hopefully slightly understand how this is supposed to work: https://www.yaskawa.com/downloads/search-index/details?showType=details&docnum=DE6425439 …pic.twitter.com/X3uosY3gcN

Cleaning isn't a 100% success. In some cases, like the "T" on the big emergency stop button, the grime is stuck on there about as hard as the paint, so if you try to get it clean it ends up taking off the paint.pic.twitter.com/91fTTP61Q4
