literal doesn't always mean good. there's a huge difference between "I like you" and "I love you" for westerners. Translating Kaoru's words literally makes this scene and many other details have a lot less impactpic.twitter.com/Eep3P2DnHc

As far as I know in japan they almost never use the word "love" in it's literal sence so in many shows you can see confessing or even proposing to each other using "suki"

The name of the company that did the localization is khara. As in, the studio in Japan that Hideki Anno owns and that produces the Evangelion Rebuild films.

To me that means nothing, because Toei for example still greenlit 4kids One piece dub and Sailor Moon dic dub, Japanese studios just don't care for western audiences.

One thing to note it may also be referring to the attack in 1995 which was conducted by an extremist religious group or cult, and Evangelion was relatively fresh in the wake of that. Sect usually was left extremist, but after that incident, wasn't exclusively.
