You can look at a skull and have it symbolize the frightening reality of your mortality, the finitude of your lifespan, the ultimate meaninglessness of everything you hold dear; the reminder of the inevitability of your dissolution into a mystery of eternal absence of light.

You can also look at a skull and realize it’s laughing—laughing warm-heartedly at the idiocy of looking at reality in the way described before; laughing at the cosmic joke that is life, at “the good King’s jest.” Which one do you see?
