Technical sophistication may impress your peers, but the market doesn't care about it.

Such an easy thing to forget in any craft. The public/market/audience has absolutely no idea nor interest in knowing how it’s put together behind the scenes, provided it gives them what they want.

I suspect technical sophistication and unnecessary complexity is downstream of not having skin in the game.

For sure. Though sometimes it’s just what follows from passion and deep immersion in the creative process—but in this case no fuss or noise is made of it.
