Haha—I’m delighted that you thought of me with this…though this pales in comparison with other stories here. I’m reminded of a situation when I was serving in my country’s defense forces (mandatory for all capable men here); I was on a vigil on a clear late May midnight.

A bit tired after a long day, I was sitting in the spot between a few rocks and trees next to a small road I was watching. Suddenly I felt—very subtly—like someone was behind me. It was a roe deer couple, a few meters behind me in the forest.

The encounter was just magical. These are such immeasurably beautiful creatures—the grace just radiated from them in the clear, still and bright night (the sun sets very late up here in the summer). It’s hard to describe. I stared at them awestruck for a minute or two.

It might not sound like a profound connection, but it felt like one. I felt honoured and deeply touched by them having come so close to me and not being bothered with my presence—though a while after I’d noticed them, I fidgeted self-consciously and they sprinted away.

It really is the most precious gift when animals come close. And in no other circumstance are we so willing to make friends instantly. 😂 It’s immediate love.
