It’s not an insignificant choice of words—Jung is subtly referencing an alchemical concept called nigredo. In his analytical psychology it refers to confrontation of the shadow; in alchemy it refers to utter blackness—both feminine in a symbolic sense, as in the yin-principle ☯️
