Impermanence needs permanence in order to be recognized as impermanent (and vice versa) – just as white needs black to be recognized as white, or existence needs non-existence to be recognized as existence.

Awareness, being the background on which impermanent phenomena occur, is thus permanent (at least more so than the ephemeral phenomena witnessed by it).
