This is what Almustafa meant in Gibran's Prophet by saying "let there be spaces in your togetherness." Your fingers aren't separate from each other just because they aren't glued together all the time; they're parts of the same hand, and the hands are parts of the same body.

So are all living beings parts of the same wholeness, and the space that seems to separate them from each other is actually that which allows them to function together; to serve the will of a continuity far greater than our capacity for conception.
