The etymology of Maya; illusion is interesting: it’s (likely) derived from the Sanskrit root mã-, “to measure” or man-, “to think”. (Perhaps there’s a connection to “mathematics” as well? 😄)

Anyways, projecting patterns onto reality to measure it is indeed the mind’s function. Now when we come to hold these abstract patterns of our imagination as same thing they represent, we’re under the illusion of Maya; we expect a picture of a banana to satisfy our hunger...
