Public defenders have largely been ignored in the national conversation around criminal justice reform. The conversation is one sided without sharing things only we see, what our clients face in the CJS.
There are more constraints on us and navigating the ethical minefield is something offices avoid (I know I have been silenced continuously in my office and often told to “advocate” through my work as a PD). So, I think the result is silent PD offices and vocal L.E.
