I completely agree that creating better childcare options and parent- friendly culture would be hugely beneficial. I disagree, though, that the only way to be successful is to do x, y and z. This perception, added to fertility statistics, is too big a burden to carry.

But with ECRs, I think the perception overwhelmingly still *is* that the only way to succeed is to do x,y,z. So when the men in STEM are able to do the x,y,z and women (for whatever reasons) do a,b,c, it can still feel like we're being inadequate even if we aren't.

This fits with my experience... I don’t know what the answer is though.

The Dana Farber idea is great. It could also be a chance for a senior post-doc to “run the lab” as they move towards their own independent career. Need to think more about this.

I was also convinced. But, the author identifies an classic example of sexism (a system set up to serve the career needs of young men, putting young women at a disadvantage) and yet she vehemently denies that it is an example of sexism.

Very articulate and insightful piece by
@KarenMorenz about lack of diversity in senior STEM academia (and other fields). There are alternative models than academia for doing great Science such as#CSIRO including arrangements for work life balance and a focus on long term impact.Hvala. Very interesting discussion Karen - and insightful. I always said I needed a wife when I was a young academic. I envied my male colleges the stay at home person that organised their world so they could research and write!! But that IS sexism surely? Built in, unacknowledged!

We were discussing this article with my husband yesterday. I agree with the “maternal wall” concept 100%. Having had a job (3 yrs) between my BS and grad school, I was even closer to the “starting a family” time when I got my PHD. That determined my career choice post PHD.

A huge factor in my work happiness and success is high-quality daycare on-campus, a five minute walk from my desk. Both of my kids started there ~10 weeks old, and I was and am able to visit them during the day.

Thank you,
@KarenMorenz for getting a conversation started! I'm curious -- I'm actually at a national lab, so does that put me in the 'government' count rather than 'academia'? - Još 1 odgovor
