    Good evening digging in the Rough-Stuff Fellowship archives. Scotland, 1970, was a good trip. Crazy thing is, there are so many strong images that none of these may make the final book. For more on the project see link in bio.

    In the '49 Giro he bagged pink on the 9th stage. A wk later + with just 3 stages to go he was still in pink. And then came Cuneo-Pinerolo, a day writ in legend, Leoni's name forgotten, blurred by the majesty of Fausto Coppi, his former team-mate. (Pic is '47 Giro. Leoni on left)

    OTD 1917, birth of Adolfo Leoni. Aged 14 he he won the first bike race he entered, having added a year to his age in order to be allowed compete. Aged 25, he won Milan-Sanremo, a war time edition of the classicissima di primavera. Eight yrs later, he bagged a Tour stage (pic).

    In 1937 he had unleashed his devasting sprint to win the amateur World Championships, in Denmark. As well as a rainbow jumper he won a contract with Bianchi, where he stayed for a decade. Between 1938 & 1951 he bagged 17 Giro stages, the last few in a Legnano jersey.

    Bontempi was a long-time Davide Boifava stalwart, starting with Inoxpran and running through the Carrera years before seeing out his career with a couple of seasons with Emanuele Bombini's Gewiss, starting in that magical year of 1994 when dreams really did seem to come true...

    OTD 1940, birth of Franco Balmamion, two-time winner of the Giro d'Italia with back-to-back wins in 1962 + 1963. Known as the Eagle of the Canavase, he's one of a small number of Giro winners celebrated with an English language biography.
