one thing critiques of “woke capital” never really contend with is why companies are “woke.” the reason is obvious — they’ve decided it’s good for business, because $$ — and there’s no good counter argument to that. what do you want disney to do? Forget about making money?

Also: so little of “wokeness” is even “woke.” Disney is revamping very old rides to make them more appealing to modern audiences. It’s letting employees have tattoos. you could stretch and call this woke, I guess? You could also say Disney wants to sell stuff in the 2020s

and then there are the times that the backlash “wokeness” leads to *more* sales! eg: Seuss enterprises stops selling some offensive books. anti-wokesters buy tons of non-offensive Seuss books. Profit!!

That would mean confronting the idea that they are not actually The Silent Majority on these issues. I mean, except for some people like @roddreher who already regard themselves as fighting behind enemy lines in the culture wars.

The GOP has decided that a kleptocratic mafia state is our future... nothing you, nor I, nor Disney can really do about it.

I think the most charitable view of the argument is that since Disney et al are such huge influences on culture, if they pushed back, they'd likely make ~the same money and "wokeness" would be kept at bay. By embracing it, they're contributing to the broader change. 🤷‍♂️

All of that is correct. Though I suppose that part of the rationale for such critiques is a signaling mechanism that attempts to shift perception that being woke is net profit positive.

Indeed, “honoring the trend of shifting cultural standards/movements in order to strategically appeal to the market” is rebranded as “buckling to authoritarian Leftist demands”

Your argument is the corporations cannot be criticized for seeking to maximize profits?

my argument is that the party of tax-cutting profit maximization should explain either why a) profit maximization is bad in this instance or b) wokeness isn’t profit maximizing. Neither is adequately addressed in this debate
