For sure it’s hard to do without usage analytics (similar to Guess.js) and/or server-side rendering. But maybe there’s middle ground solutions. I don’t know. But on the React side the capability is there.

cc @TheLarkInn I know you like threads like this. Don’t know if React can win your love back but hope you see the promise here. 😍

How does lazy work with webpack now?

In webpack dynamic import creates a split chunk. So that’s too granular to do everywhere.

Oh so your trying to not have to rely on import() to give code splitting but some convention instead like lazy()?

We’re happy to rely on import(), lazy does it: const Button = lazy(() => import('./Button')) but it'd be nice if we could just const Button = import('./Button') const Input = import('./Input') and webpack knew how to deliver them most efficiently instead of always splitting

Like, imagine *every* import in your app is dynamic import. React can handle this (for components). But bundlers would produce very suboptimal results (too many split points). However, think how much freedom making every import dynamic gives to a bundler to organize chunks.

If so, how it organizes chunks? I think it's very difficult to analyze

I have a requireJS / dojo AMD flashback 😅. But if there was an active feedback loop for analysis that could potentially be very interesting

Oh sorry, totally didn't want to suggest that🤐! It was just a funny observation that programming evolution is typically an old pattern in a new and better shape 😊 (async modules by default in this case). I do see the merits!

In other words, recognizing previous art in an idea is a *good* sign in my book, not a bad one. Even when previous work didn't work out. It means that there is already a bit of knowledge about potential benefits and pitfalls of the new idea.

In that spirit, the React model is _kinda sorta_ what http://ASP.NET  Web Forms tried to do, at a very high level (custom components as markup). The idea is good, but they were way ahead of their time and the tech just wasn't there.
