as a public defender, i know as an empirical fact that innocent people plead guilty. but, today, it really hit home where a client i personally knew admitted to a crime that never happened. this is a story of prosecutors coercing innocent people into pleading guilty. [thread]

Right now, 96,000 of our family members, friends and loved ones are sleeping in prison. Many will eventually return home, but a third will end up back in prison because we don't rehabilitate people - we warehouse them.

My hot take: Trump is going to win again. 1) he's too popular, 2) we have too much voter suppression, 3) and the DNC is too incompetent and cares more about taking Bernie down than defeating Trump.

to boost morale, my office has internal awards for certain types of rare decisions, and i'm in current possession of both of them. Mr. Maltese Falcon (a complete discharge of conviction(s) on appeal) and a commemorative glass coin? (for reversal of a life sentence).

because apparently, "while she can’t technically serve on the court before September 24, that is a small detail when weighed against her overall qualifications." Her "overall qualifications"? Not her pedigree or judicial experience. It's that she's a female black FedSoc member.

this article touches on one of the (many) corrupt things Florida's judiciary is doing. there's a judge who graduated from a law school about to lose its accreditation and who is not old enough to serve on the court, but apparently that's nbd, they gonna hold the spot for her.

Today, I'm grateful for sites like Twitter and Reddit. Ppl are reporting that crushed it and did poorly. But if you wouldn't know if you just read mainstream media this morning. I have zero doubt that wouldn't be true if the results were inverted.

a prosecutor telling me that "everyone gets grace and the opportunity for a second chance except for prosecutors" is a bit like white people complaining about people being racist toward them, no?

because of deadlines outside of my control, i currently have two initial briefs, two reply briefs, a jurisdictional brief, and a response to a motion to dismiss all due within a 2-week time frame; the same time frame that I'll be out-of-state recruiting for my office.

Public defenders have consistently the smartest category of lawyer I've met. You can't make any dent in the prison industrial complex unless you're running circles around the state

Judges: I just follow prosecutor Rec, I don’t send people to say ADA: the judge sentences, not me. I don’t send people to jail Cops: i just follow the judges and prosecutors orders. I don’t send people to jail And voila people end up in jail and no one sent them there!

went to a training on vicarious trauma today. the psychologist presenter seemed to think we get vicarious trauma based on what our clients are (alleged) to have done. tbh, i'm most affected by the trauma the state inflicts on my clients.

In Florida, a judge has to explain why she gave a lenient sentence, but doesn't have to explain a harsh sentence. Also, prosecutors have the right to appeal sentences they think are too low but there's no appellate review for harsh sentences.

There are so many reasons I love being an appellate public defender, but not having to bill my time is one of the top ones. Sorry .

"On Thursday . . . the Florida Supreme Court proved beyond any reasonable doubt that it cannot be trusted to oversee Florida’s machinery of death." Good thing there's an even higher court to keep them in check...oh wait.

today, an interviewee tried to convince me she wanted to be a public defender by, in part, citing the fact that Addie was her favorite American Girl doll. you don't have to convince me girl! addie was the best, and i don't want to hear nothing from you samantha lovers.
