CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT might finally make it into Linus’ tree! 🙌https://twitter.com/kernellogger/status/1151072588657045504 …

A small, but in a way most important change of the #realtime (RT) patchset for #Linux was submitted for #kernel 5.3: Tglx asked Linus to merge a patch introducing CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT that, if enabled, will make the resulting kernel fully preemptible: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20190715150402.798499167@linutronix.de/T/#u … pic.twitter.com/P1BgqydMbl

Crikey! That would be amazing. RT has felt really neglected and could be a real pain if working on CNC projects and you ended up having to build kernels.

Support from @linuxfoundation has helped tremendously. I think it’s fair to say that their funding saved the project from being completely unmaintained.

That's great to hear. I remember when real-time was a big deal for telcos and a barrier to adoption back in the days of Carrier Grade Linux early efforts with OSDL, pre-Linux Foundation. Then it later felt like it just fell by the wayside.

Yeah, it definitely went through a phase of being a bit unloved (excluding the core developer community which has always been fantastic). Thomas Gleixner did everything short of writing blues songs about RT before funding finally came:https://lwn.net/Articles/617140/ …
