Tennessee’s new commissioner of health made his first appearance before a legislative committee Wednesday, though the Republican chairman warned members not to question Dr. Ralph Alvarado about HIV funding.

We know this has more to do with than we knew last week. There is a court injunction that would make it hard to only pull money from them. We also know the hasn’t been notified that TN won’t take money for HIV prevention. More to come.

New: Top Tennessee health officials attempted to oust Planned Parenthood from a program designed to prevent and treat HIV before eventually deciding this week to forgo federal funding for the program. My story:

A federal ban on surprise medical bills hasn’t entirely curbed the practice, especially in Tennessee. During the law’s first six months, the state has among the most disputes in the country with nearly 7,000.

I've heard from so many folks in Tennessee with long covid symptoms. We've got a episode this week dedicated to the topic, and we need to hear from you. Very simple to share your questions and concerns here:

Yes! And the Nashville Bransfords loaned 2 slaves, Nicholas and Materson Bransford, to aid Bishop in exploring and guiding tours. One of Materson’s descendants, Jerry Bransford, is still a seasonal ranger at MCNP! I was so excited when we ran into him there 2 summers ago.

Had never heard (though shouldn't be surprised) that enslaved people helped map Mammoth Cave. Very cool story. Listen, don't read.

Grew up just across the river from this iconic establishment and somehow I've never been to Arnold's. Of course, we only went out to eat once in a blue moon. And only to .

A third vote for Speaker is taking place and it seems we'll likely need a fourth as Rep. Jordan already has 4 votes. Here's our story about @AndyOgles choosing to side with the 19 against McCarthy.

Great fellowship through is still open for applications. I was surprised to have my project accepted. It was kind of halfbaked when I pitched it. But the mentors helped me sharpen it up, and it became some of my proudest work. Deadline is Jan 13. healthjournalism.org/prof-dev-fello

TBH, I'm not sure how much difference this will make. Very hard to tell if other states require this, but Tennessee is making either your doctor or your health plan let you know if they're having a discussion over pre-approval for coverage.

It really is crazy. Happens to me too. But apparently not a super power.

My friend needs help. He's building a new life after 20 years in prison. With a year of work behind him, it's become clear that getting ahead requires a car. Amazed how many people are donating who don't know Theatry at all. Blessings are already flowing. gofund.me/7765769c

Things I'm learning about high power demand this morning: power lines can "burn down." Apparently that's happening on Chester St in East Nashville.

It's not just that everyone's using a bunch of power to heat their homes. TVA also has some units that are down because of the cold, though the utility has note offered many details.
