Hey artist friends, one of my best friends wants to go to school and get into game art 
Any advice for him like school/major wise and anything you wish you'd known when you were getting started?

I'd recommend they do art wherever and whenever they can. Practice their line work and shading skills. The 10,000 hours to mastery thing is so true, across so many disciplines. Try to match their art to the studio they like.

Yeah sure! Yes, I agree that he should focus on art art art. Game art is a niche, and very competitive, and not the most lucrative (tho fun!). If your friend focuses on general art, however, he will have a lot more versatility going forward. And yes: practice CONSTANTLY!

Echoing PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! But also remember to take breaks and listen to your body when you're grinding too hard. Also have focus/practice days. For example, Sundays I practice my weakest skills (like hands and feet or PBR texturing and UV layouts).
