We mark the 85th anniversary of one of the greatest achievements in modern astrophysics, the discovery of the Chandrasekhar mass. (1/2)

Truly one of the most amazing untold stories in the history of science is that of Walter Pitts. Rising from absolute poverty without a formal education, he developed the foundational concepts that paved the way to neural nets and deep learning. He was the real Will Hunting.

As a 19 year old working with James Binney, the beauty of Galactic Dynamics lured me into astrophysics. With GAIA tracing orbits of billions of stars, now is the most exciting time to be dynamicist. Join us in NYC for our summer school!

Thrilled to hear that Jim Truran is the recipient of the 2020 LAD Laboratory Astrophysics Prize! We first met over coffee in California when he convinced me to join the Flash Center and blow up white dwarfs. What a richly-deserved award!!

Mark Twain said that history does not repeat itself but often rhymes, and the same can be said for academic research. It is remarkable how many of the central themes of my own career find parallels in Spiegel's work many decades after his pioneering advances. 3/3

Spiegel made fundamental contributions to astrophysical fluid dynamics and chaos theory, working on the later topic at the same time as Edward Lorenz. He coined the terms "blazar" and "photon bubble." A great website has been set up to remember him: 2/3

I just learned that one of academic great-grandparents, Edward Spiegel, passed away earlier this month. Spiegel studied with Chandrasekhar, was a founding member of the summer geophysical fluid dynamics program, and spent much of his career . 1/3

Chandra's scientific contributions extend far beyond stellar astrophysics. Recently, renowned fluid dynamicist Katepalli Sreenivasan wrote a wonderful review of Chandra's significant contributions to fluid dynamics. (2/2)

It's a zoo of thermonuclear supernovae out there! Fortunately, Ashley Ruiter () has a great new review out to help guide you through the very latest thinking on the outstanding mystery of the stellar origins of these supernovae.

A very nice paper from Dr. Doctor! Zoheyr builds upon an important set of papers led by my former PhD student and by Michael Coughlin and collaborators, and lays down a statistical foundation for how neutron star mergers can be used as standardizable candles.

The famed supernova 1987A is the astronomical gift that keeps on giving. Modern supernova science, from cosmic acceleration to the Hubble constant tension, can be traced back to scientists who cut their teeth on 87A. Sanduleak -69 202 is dead. Long live Sanduleak -69 202!

Franchises are paradoxical. Audiences return to them time and again, but they are creative deserts for directors and screenwriters. Abrams did amazing work on the first two seasons of Lost, but since then has been slinging hash.
