Indefinite thread to post as my pinned tweet. Pictures of what I’m about and what I’m doing. First up: some animals I raise for food (meat, milk, and eggs) and some hay I cut with a scythe 1/

Don’t focus so much on “I’m a farmer” to miss other opportunities. If you can fix computers or something and there is no local guy doing that- you might miss an opportunity for a side business that doesn’t stop you from growing your garden.

Because I only had a few goats, it was easy to add rabbits. I was not spending all day on goats. With a few rabbits, I quickly saw how many I needed for a meat supply and know how many I want to keep. If I was over invested in goats I may have never known.

Buy a few of an animal first. What if I got 100 goats and I found out I hated goats? Or couldn’t care for them? Now I know what a goat is. And I grow the heard very slowly. Maybe laughably slowly to some. Let them laugh, but I am not overwhelmed by goats.

If my goat herd fails I am out very little in terms of cost. Although I have spent time on them, I enjoyed it. My goats are mobile within my property but I am also mobile in terms of goats. I am not so invested I couldn’t let them go, and although I enjoy milk, not dependent

that I built out of found materials and some inexpensive wood. Very mobile. Every night though, I put them in the barn. Barn was already here. I do not think of an alternative- I am tied to this barn. If it wasn’t here I would not build such an expensive and large structure

Although we are talking about buying land, be mobile within it. Machinery ties you down. Large infrastructure means you are physically, financially, and psychologically tied to doing things a certain way. For example- I use mobile electric fence for goats with a simple shade

This goes to the question of equipment. I am a big advocate of not buying any equipment unless you are forced into it. Someone else has the machine. Be friends with them, trade goods, work, or social capital with them, or just straight up pay them. Think of yourself as mobile

DO NOT put yourself in a position early on where if a crop or something fails that you are just done. This is why I think “profit” is a bad checkmate goal. You will make decisions to force profit in one area when maybe you should try something new. If you want money don’t farm.

Then you can try different things. See what works. Like chess, if your short term plan to trap a piece is foiled you can change it up and be okay. Because that short term plan does not change your long term plan. Your idea of checkmate is not predicated on any certain set up.

On lock, it’s not going to ruin me. In fact, I like that. Then I can get tomatoes from him. This is why I think a long term goal that isn’t growing a certain thing or making money a certain way is good. If you choose your land based living factors over producing factors

When I look at my long term goal- living in a garden with the family- those cons were acceptable. Everything else is short term. If I didn’t come here thinking “I will sell tomatoes for a living” it doesn’t matter if I don’t have great tomato land. If another farmer had tomatoes

Land is more expensive there because of this. I could afford more land where I chose and have some other pros- less populous, more hunting opportunity, less regulations, and less expectations from neighbors- everything around me is overgrown I can’t really “let it go” any worse

In all of these things you will have trade offs. You will have to think of your own pro/con balance. A lot of woods might not sound good to someone who wants to grow wheat, but could sound great to the hunter or mushroom grower. A few miles from me is less hilly and more cleared

Those would be for general area. When down to specific properties there’s some classics- view, ease of access, quality of the house, school district, etc. Related to gardening would be land slope, sunlight hours, water features like ponds or creeks, rockiness, etc.
