And listen, it’s pretty insidious. Most are not going around saying “white experiences are universal!!” They/we usually don’t even know to label them white experiences— which is the problem. The experiences held up as universal are actually white-specific experiences.

It took me a long time to unlearn this belief in my own neutrality and tbh I’m still unlearning it. The cultural training that white people recieve to make us think that we are race-less, neutral beings goes DEEP and has a long history.

It’s our job, as white people, to do that work. We created (and consistently recreate!) the idea of white universality. We need to root it out. We need to shine a bright light on stories perceived to be universal and understand the impact that whiteness has on those stories.

Since folks have asked, here is another thread of some further reading I recommend on the subject: https://twitter.com/findmereading/status/1262126141793603587?s=21 …https://twitter.com/findmereading/status/1262126141793603587 …

:nods in vehement agreement: “I want curly hair” or “If I was taller I’d have the life I want” do not = trans experience. Every day I see/interact w/ people I’m misgendered. In public I live w/ the constant threat of violence. I can’t imagine adding blackness on top of this

YES! My experiences discovering my gender / sexuality are literally as much influenced my whiteness as they are by my queerness! I fully cannot talk about one without the other!!

Could you please elaborate a bit because that sounds like an interesting perspective I don't have much insight into.

It's difficult to learn and process when you're mixed in some way or another, whether race or ethnicity, since it's a lifelong process of learning when and where you fit into some experiences and what you're labeled, along with it always changing in time and place, too.

Thank you for saying this. It’s been a full on process to unlearn the expectation that to be “normal” centers around the white (and straight) experience. I wasted too much of my life trying to reconcile that with reality. And none of my straight white friends can comprehend it
