Defence secretary Moriarty says they do get contacted by journos to discuss potentially sensitive stories. Refers to the time the Canberra Times came across a notebook that had sensitive notes in it:https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/6023299/defence-takes-back-classified-notebook-from-fairfax-media-newsroom/digital-subscription/ …

Crimes handed the notebook back but published a few stories. Moriarty said he commended the paper for doing that.

Dreyfus is asking Defence to break down the classification levels. AUSTEO: Australian Secret Eyes Only, as in literally only Australians can see it (not sure if this means not even our Five Eyes mates can see it)

Dreyfus is now asking whether Annika Smethurst was wrong on her ASD story. (Home Affairs skipper Pezzullo said it was earlier.) Again, they seem to be arguing about what ASD would be capable of not so much what was being proposed they do. (Spy on Australians without a warrant.)

Here's the story that's raising a lot of eyebrows:https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/spying-shock-shades-of-big-brother-as-cybersecurity-vision-comes-to-light/news-story/bc02f35f23fa104b139160906f2ae709 …

Defence secretary said he believes the story harmed Australia's national security because it detailed ASD's cyber capability. Dreyfus: "Where in the story does it talk about ASD's cyber capability?" Moriarty refers again to what was proposed in the yarn.

ASD acting director general Frewen says the article sought to undermine public confidence. Dreyfus says he's not sure Frewen can say what the article sought to do. Frewen concedes.

Defence associate secretary Rebecca Skinner: "We would classify this sort of activity as an insider threat."

Labor MP Anthony Byrne is trying to get ASD's Frewen to speculate on the intent for leaking the ASD proposal. It's been speculated before - not today - that it was a Canberra public service game to undermine Home Affairs boss Pezzullo.
