Liberal senator David Fawcett has asked why should whistleblowers break the law when there are sufficient internal mechanisms to raise the alarm? Barnes says that's a matter of if the whistleblower is told to go away, shut up or their concerns aren't taken seriously.

Barnes won't name the case but he's seems to point to the case of Witness K as an example. (And for that matter, Witness K's lawyer, Bernard Collaery.)
