Liberal senator David Fawcett has asked why should whistleblowers break the law when there are sufficient internal mechanisms to raise the alarm? Barnes says that's a matter of if the whistleblower is told to go away, shut up or their concerns aren't taken seriously.

As a Local Government whistleblower, I can also confirm Local & State Level mechanisms are deficient. Wodonga Council CEO & directors overcharged ratepayers $18 million, Ombudsman reported issue, but directors kept their jobs and one became a CEO, no justice in Local Government.
