Making ChatGPT "safe" for its users (customers) creates incredibly unsafe conditions for others. Framing this as "making ChatGPT less toxic" is insulting IMHO
Quote Tweet
In a statement, OpenAI said the work was part of its mission "to build safe and useful AI systems that limit bias and harmful content." It said its outsourcing partner was responsible for pay and mental healthcare provision. (7/8)

As many scholars have been highlighting over the last years 'AI' needs a humongous amount of human labor to 'work'. #ChatGPT apparently organised this work in a very exploitative, neo-colonial way by outsourcing the most toxic parts to the global south and underpaid workers.

HOLY SMOKES This will forever be one thing I got wrong about our bubble. I just assumed Alexa was profitable because of all the attention it was receiving and all my friends and family members who owned Alexa devices. If Alexa is THIS unprofitable, imagine what else is.

So a new thing happened. A paper we submitted got rejected by a journal after automated plagiarism detection. It turned out two students in India had plagiarised our preprint and then published online reports. So we've been accused of copying them. Fun.

Never forget, a 13-year study of a dozen cities found that PROTECTED bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for ALL ROAD USERS. And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. As for sharrows, it’s safer to NOT have them. V/

I guess the mission is going great?
Quote from Galactica's mission page: "Researchers are buried under a mass of papers, increasingly unable to distinguish between the meaningful and the inconsequential. GALACTICA aims to solve this problem."
Quote Tweet
I asked #Galactica about some things I know about and I'm troubled. In all cases, it was wrong or biased but sounded right and authoritative. I think it's dangerous. Here are a few of my experiments and my analysis of my concerns. (1/9)

The other lesson is not to get too carried away with self-regarding language about the “war for talent”, which was ubiquitous in the tech sector until recently. There are talented people in all walks of life. What matters for pay is supply and demand. Low-paid workers in the US have been getting big pay rises in nominal terms this year. No one is calling that a “war for talent”; they are calling it a “labour shortage”."

This is a great column by @sarahoconnor_ on the @FT about lay-offs in tech. It also includes some quotes of mine as to how they represent a rude awakening about a business & HR model that was long considered winning and ever beneficial for workers THREAD ft.com/content/b6fdff

Thinking a bit more about this, I guess the STS move would be: Whether that kind of love letter would be deemed a failure or deception is highly dependent on social/collective negotiations about originality, deception, failure, imitation, etc. (Which is what is already going on.)
Quote Tweet
