IIRC, this is a long exposure photo, and capturing a single instant wouldn't give enough light for the atom to show up.

And it's not "motionless." It's moving relatively slowly, for an atom, and is confined by the laser trap, but it's moving.

You can't infer the size of an atom from an image like this - the size of the spot you're seeing is more about the optics and camera used to image it
