An in-between stage was the "syncopated" stage, with lots of abbreviations. Instead of x for the unknown, the German word "coss" was used (meaning "thing"). Algebraists used to be called "cossists." So glad I didn't have to learn algebra in those days!

The horror! Same is the case with ancient and medieval Indian Mathematical treatises. To top it, they were mostly in verse form so, indulging in creative exercises to codify the problem was common.
