Question: why is this cross-sea pattern dangerous?

When 2 waves meet, the wave height doubles. When 3 waves meet, the height triples. When 2 storrms meet, 4, 5, or 6 of their wind-driven waves can pile up, with catastrophic results if one happens to be there.

@fermatslibrary:#KadomtsevPetviashvili (KP) equation is a partial differential equation to describe nonlinear wave motion. KP equation can be used to model waves in#FerroMagnetic media, and two-dimensional#MatterWavePulses in#BoseEinsteinCondensates.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Would you happen to know why? Would love to know

Colliding wave patterns in different directions cause rip currents and can form strong, tall waves in all directions. As a swimmer, you'll have no control on your direction. Even boats can't easily combat multi-directional currents.
