On a similar note, Madam Curie is the only person to be awarded a Nobel prize in two different sciences: Physics and Chemistry. She shared the Physics one with Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel though.

Linus Pauling gave a talk at Reed College in the 1980s. He came across as one of those sweet and energetic elderly people. He started out by noting that the lecture hall did not have a periodic table, so he just drew one out on the blackboard so he could then refer to it.
