The Archimedean 'method of exhaustion' to calculate π was used most notably by Ludoph van Ceulen in the 16th Century, who reached a regular polygon with 4,611,686,018,427,387,904 sides to arrive at a value of π correct to 35 digits, calculated by hand.https://bit.ly/2ID0clG

In 499 AD, Indian mathematician Aryabhatta was using the approximation 62832/20000 for π. Correct to 4 decimal places, it was the simplest approximation that gave the highest accurately known value of π known till that date (one that even exceeded √10 that many were using then).

The current record (jan 2020) is 50 trillion digits and It *only* cost ~$10k to compute! Great write up by the record holder here: https://blog.timothymullican.com/calculating-pi-my-attempt-breaking-pi-record … setup used for the computation 👇pic.twitter.com/jiRaGL3nmZ

50 trillion digits of pi, took 10 months to compute (including 1 month lost to power outages). Yow.

You can calculate the circumference of the observable universe to within one atom of accuracy with the first 39 digits of pi.

While they used John Machim's formula to compute π, the modern technique employs the usage of Chudnovsky Algorithm for calculating π. Published by the Chudnovsky brothers in 1989, it was used in the current world record calculation of 22.4 trillion digits of π in November 2016.pic.twitter.com/Da8ix4i3sv
