I was surprised to learn (while reading Wikipedia) that there are still some peaks in the Himalayas that have yet to be summited by humans simply b/c the terrain is too dangerous to be climbed safely.

The earth is not a perfect 'sphere', so you don't need to 'travel' the same distance to get to the center of the earth.

Does that mean air is thinnest at (3)? Or is it still (1)?
-
Air would be thinnest at (1) since it has the highest total elevation of the three. (3) is at the equator, the "widest" point on earth. So, the distance from the center of the planet to the mountain in Ecuador is greater than Nepal's from its "thinner" latitude.
