    15th century sailors kept track of their speed at sea with a knotted rope, a piece of wood and an hourglass. This is the reason why “knots" became a unit of speed for maritime navigation.         Knots is primarily only used for nautical aviation purposes. I'd consider It a legacy unit by this point. We should use one of the SI units like m/s or km/h.

        And knots these days are used, even when you aren't at all close to the water. That is, airplanes still use knots as a measure of speed.
