I read that this is rare enough that aliens would visit just to see it. Next eclipse, look around closely at your fellow eclipse watchers...

I'm an atheist but every time I think about this "coincidence" it makes me wonder.

Too many coincidences to take for granted, makes you think.

There is another angle to it as well. Distance b/w Earth & Sun ~= 108 * Diameter of the Sun Distance b/w Earth & Moon ~= 108 * Diameter of the Moon Diameter of Sun ~= 108 * Diameter of Earth Thats one of the reason why 108 is a sacred number in Hinduism.

Aren't these variable cause they're elliptical orbits and not circular ones?

even more remarkable is the moon is moving away from the earth so this is also a coincidence in time over the earth's entire history that such an eclipse allows general relativity to be verified when a species has evolved that is capable of discovering GE.

If the moon and earth both had circular orbits, that would be quite a coincidence indeed.

This is true now. The distance between earth and moon increases with time. In the future, eclipses will be no longer possible.
